Some fans had speculated Arc of a Scythe and the Unwind Dystology took place in the same world, the Unwind series being the events that led to Scythe, but author Neal Shusterman has confirmed they are different worlds. The series centers on a group of people set for unwinding during a time in the future when children between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can be "unwound" by their parents.
